HISTORY

Established in 1948, the University of Ibadan, UI as it is fondly referred to, is the first University in Nigeria. Until 1962 when it became a full-fledged independent University, it was a College of the University of London in a special relationship scheme. The University, which took off with academic programmes in Arts, Science and

 Medicine, is now a comprehensive citadel of learning with academic programmes in sixteen Faculties namely, Arts, Science, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Agriculture, the Social Sciences, Education, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Technology, Law, Public Health, Dentistry, Economics, Renewable Natural Resources and Environmental Design and Management. The Faculties of the Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Public Health and Dentistry are organised as a College of Medicine. The University has other academic units among which are: Institute of Child Health, Institute of Education, Institute of African Studies, Centre for Child Adolescent and Mental Health, Centre for Educational Media Resource Studies, African Regional Centre for Information Science (ARCIS), Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (CEPACS), Centre for Petroleum, Energy, Economics and Law (CPEEL), Centre for Sustainable Development (CESDEV), and Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI),Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training (IAMRAT), Centre for Drug Discovery, Development & Production (CDDDP), Centre for Control & Prevention of Zoonosis (CCPZ). The new National Institute of Maternal, Child and Neonatal Health (NIMCNH) and the Institute of Infectious Diseases are under construction. A new business school (UISB) is expected to start later this year. As part of its efforts to fulfill its God-given mission to promote the development of Nigeria, the University established a Research Foundation (UIRF). In response to emerging threats to peace and peaceful coexistence in Africa, the university established the Institute for Peace Strategies (IPSS) to provide practical research and solutions. 

The University of Ibadan Graduate School is part of the  overall  University System  of   Nigeria,  the  Public and Private Universities  Division   of   Nigeria.  Graduate  students   make   up  about 50% of the total student population. The University of Ibadan  awards  an average of 3,000 master's degrees and 250  doctorate   degrees  each year. The university currently hosts the Pan-African University Institute of Life and Earth Sciences on behalf of the West African region. This is an African Union initiative. The program is in his second year and has 97 of his students from all over Africa. The  main  goal of a 21st century university is to  be  a world-class institution of academic  excellence,   responsive   to  the needs of society. Today, the university is consistently ranked among the most prestigious universities in the world. 

There are 12  student   dormitories   in   his   building,   and   about  30% of regular  students   live   there.   With  support from the FG  recovery   fund,   he   has   three   more   under   construction.  The  university  has 1,212 dormitories, of which 609 are for  executives  and 603 are for junior staff. The University of Ibadan is therefore a very complex organization.  We   operate  on a committee system. All  agencies  and  commissions  report to the Council and/or Senate. In  line  with its original  mission  of teaching,  research  and social service, the university provides staff and students with basic services such as electricity, water, security, medical  facilities  and other social services on a large scale. 

 The   University   of   Ibadan,   through  its alumni and alumni,  has  made   significant   contributions  to the political, industrial, economic and cultural development of Nigeria over the past 60 years.  These alumni,  staff,  and students  have   had  a profound impact on the world through new discoveries,  innovations,  and inventions in science, medicine, agriculture,  business,  and technology.
