How to apply for FG’s student loan

On Monday, June 12, 2023,  President  Bola  Tinub  signed into law the  student   loan   law.  The bill, which  gives  Nigerian students  access to interest-free loans, was introduced by  outgoing  Speaker  of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila. 

 PUNCH reported that the  law  passed  a  second reading  in  the  House   of   Representatives  on May 23, 2023. 

 Higher   education   experts   argue   that  the  creation  of an education  bank   will   give   federally   owned   higher   education  institutions  the  freedom  to introduce tuition  fees.   

   Some   state-run   universities  have  already  started announcing  tuition   hikes.   For   example,  in  December   2022,  The PUNCH  exclusively reported how some  federal  universities announced a  200%   increase  in fees.  The  introduction of the education bank  is   expected   to   resolve  the funding  shortage   at   universities.  

 Students   applying   for   loans   under   the   law   must   apply   to   bank   presidents   through   their   respective   educational   institutions,   according  to the bill, which was  confirmed  by our correspondent on  Monday.  

 I.   Students  must have  obtained  admission  to   a  public  university,   technical   college,   teacher   training  college  or  vocational   school   in   Nigeria.   The   applicant's  income or  household  income must be less than N500,000 per  year.   The   applicant  must  have  at least two  of   her   public   officials  as  guarantors.   At   least   she   needs   12+   years  of  service.   Or   an   attorney  with at least 10 years  of  post-call  experience.   Legal   officer.   Or   peace   justice.  

ii. Students who have defaulted on  loans   in   the   past.   Exam   errors,   criminal   offenses   and  drug  offenses   are   not   considered.  

 

   iii.   Students   whose   parents   have   past   loan   delinquencies  will not be considered. 

 After   meeting  the  above   conditions,   please   apply   to  the  student   affairs   office  of each  institution.   This   includes   submitting   to   the  institution  a list of all  eligible   applicants,   along   with  a cover letter signed by the  Vice   Chancellor,   Chancellor,  or  Director  of  Institutions  and  Student Affairs. 

 Regarding  repayment, the  law   stipulates  that  "each  beneficiary of  a  loan to which this  law   relates   must   begin  repayment two years after  the National Youth Service  Program   ends."   Reimbursement   is   made  by  the   employer   withholding   and  direct deduction of 10  percent  of the  beneficiary's   salary.  

 “If  the beneficiary is self-employed,  we   will   transfer  10  percent  of  the   gross  profit  each   month  to  a  student loan account  designated  by the bank. 

 “For the  purposes  of  paragraph  3 above,  the  self-employed  shall, within 60 days of  obtaining   this   qualification,   provide   the   company   name,   address   and   address,   registration   documents,   person   of   record,   name   of   bank   officer   and   name   of   employee   ,   must  submit all information such as  names,   etc.   Participation   in   committees  of directors and  shareholders.  

“Anyone  who   fails   to   comply   with  the provisions of  Article   4,  or  who   is  found to  have   failed   to   comply   with  any  provision  of this  Act,   shall   be   charged   with   a   criminal   offense   and   shall,  if convicted,  be   sentenced   to   two   years'   imprisonment.  shall be  punished   with  imprisonment  or a fine of  500   Naira.',000,  or  both.
